First images of Pope Francis' mortal remains released as Vatican prepares for historic funeral

The Vatican has released the first images of Pope Francis' mortal remains, which are now lying in repose at the Chapel of Casa Santa Marta. The late pontiff, who passed away on April 21, at the age of 88, is seen dressed in traditional papal vestments as Swiss Guards stand vigil beside him. These images mark the beginning of the global farewell to Pope Francis, whose death has led to a worldwide outpouring of tributes from leaders and citizens alike.

Pope Francis passed away at 7:35 a.m. (0535 GMT) in his private residence at Casa Santa Marta after suffering a cerebral stroke that resulted in a coma and irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse. He had been battling several underlying health conditions, including arterial hypertension, bronchiectasis, Type 2 diabetes, and a recent bout of double pneumonia, which required hospitalization for five weeks. The pontiff had also narrowly recovered from acute respiratory failure during his recent hospitalization but succumbed weeks later to his health complications. His death certificate was signed by Professor Andrea Arcangeli, the Director of Health for the Vatican City State.

Following his death, world leaders offered condolences, recognizing Pope Francis' impact on global spirituality, diplomacy, and humanitarian causes. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called him “a beacon of compassion and justice” and extended India’s condolences, while US President Donald Trump remembered the pope as “a spiritual giant and a courageous reformer who led the Church through turbulent times with grace.” French President Emmanuel Macron also honored Pope Francis, calling him “a conscience for the world,” highlighting his dedication to environmental issues and interfaith dialogue.

Preparations are underway for Pope Francis' funeral, which will be held within four to six days. In line with his wishes, the pontiff will not be buried in the traditional location under St. Peter’s Basilica. Instead, he requested to be buried at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. This decision sets a significant departure from past papal traditions, as previous popes have been laid to rest at the Vatican Grottoes. The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, holds particular significance for Pope Francis, as it was a place where he often prayed before and after his international travels.

In accordance with his preference for simplicity, Pope Francis will be buried in a single, zinc-lined wooden coffin, rather than the elaborate multi-layer caskets typically used for papal burials. This reflects his broader efforts to modernize and simplify Church traditions. The Vatican has prepared a new formal rite for the papal funeral, as released in 2024, which will include a solemn procession and the participation of the College of Cardinals. The funeral marks the end of a transformative papacy, one that redefined the Catholic Church’s role in the 21st century, emphasizing humility, reform, and compassion for the poor and marginalized.
